Colheita 2004 has a bright and deep color, with orange-brown reflections. The wine has a wonderful aroma, well integrated with the aroma of dried fruit. On the palate it shows a nice balance with its acidity, together with soft notes of apricot and dried figs, leading to a long and complex finish.
The winter of 2003/2004 was very dry, with only a third of the rainfall compared to the previous winter. The lack of water at the beginning of this year reduced the risk of disease, but the main concern was that the vines would not have enough water reserves in the soil to allow the grapes to fully ripen by the end of the ripening phase. Fortunately, the harvest took place under perfect weather conditions, from start to finish. The 2004 Colheita grapes come from low-yielding vineyards in the Cima Corgo region of the Douro Valley. The fruit was trampled in lagares in the cellar of Vale de Mendiz. At Vila Nova de Gaia, the wine was matured in 550 liter barrels. This Colheita Port is bottled after a maturation period of at least 10 years, but the 2004 vintage has matured even longer thanks to the excellent quality of the wine and its aging potential. The first bottling took place in March 2018.
