Appius 2014 is made from 65% Chardonnay, 15% Pinot Grigio, 8% Pinot Bianco and 12% Sauvignon Blanc from carefully selected vines in Eppan focused on the South East and South West. The terroir consists of limestone gravel and moraine. Manual harvesting takes place from the end of September to mid-October. The grapes are placed in barriques tonneaux for fermentation, biological acid reduction and vinification. Assembly takes place after just under a year, followed by another three years of aging in steel tanks with fine yeast. Retention potential is 25 to 35 years.
Since 1977, Hans Terzer has been responsible for wine production at St. Michael-Eppan Winery, making it to the top of the Italian and international wine world in just a few years. "I've had the idea of APPIUS in my head for a long time; I just had to wait for the right time."
During his regular inspections of the vineyards, he discovered many years ago that individual vines had the potential to produce absolute top wines, due to a very low yield. "I wanted to harvest and develop these grapes individually, creating a completely new and sensational wine - a wine we had not created at St. Michael-Eppan until now."
It seems to have succeeded in APPIUS 2010. Coming from several historic vineyards within the municipality of Eppan, the majority is Chardonnay; Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris and Sauvignon make up the rest. "APPIUS is basically fermented and matured in small oak barrels. After twelve months of wood aging, it ripens on the lees in steel tanks for nearly three years after that."
The third edition of the Appius superwine remains the same basic principle of grapes of excellent quality, personally selected by Hans Terzer. 2012 was a very good year in the beretsch region in terms of climate. There was no significant rainfall during the harvest and it produced fully ripe grapes with a fine fertility and intense aroma. You can taste that in the Appius 2012! The cuvee is mainly made from chardonnay, but is combined with sauvignon, pinot grigio and pinot blanc. The result is a complex nose of celestial fruits such as banana, pineapple and papaya - but also some floral notes come through. The creamy texture is flattering on the mouth, accompanied by a pleasant minerality, a delicate balance of acidity and a long lasting aftertaste. All in all, this is a harmonious and elegant wine that is exceptionally good to drink for the coming years.
